To set up Wifi printers first you need to make sure you have a wireless network. If you don’t then the first step is to purchase a wireless router. Once you have done that you will need to plug the router into your internet modem using an Ethernet cable. Most wireless routers come preconfigured and so should work right away but it is still a good idea to put a password on your network so only people you tell the password can connect, this way you don’t have the neighbors stealing your internet.
You will get instructions with the printer on how to install it, just follow them step by step and you will be fine. Usually the setup is fairly easy, it will consist of:
Connect your Wifi Printer to your wireless network. This process will vary depending on the printer but usually it is a simple as pressing a network setup button, pick your network name and enter your password (if you have one).
Make sure the computer you are installing it on is also connected to the wireless network.
In some cases temporarily connect your Wifi printer to your computer or laptop with the USB cable provided (you can remove it once the installation is complete).
Wifi Printers will come with a CD to install the printer driver and software. Insert the CD and install the software.
* Note: it is also possible to setup an Ad-Hoc network between Wifi Printers and computers so you don’t need a wireless router but I don’t recommend it as it is more complicated and less reliable than using a wireless router.
You probably won’t need to if you use the CD but if you want to manually add a network printer on your computer using Windows XP you can:
- GO to start -> Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes
- Click Add New printer
- Choose Local Printer Attached to this Computer (even though it isn’t) , make sure automatically detect and install plug and play printer is unchecked
- Choose Create new TCP/IP port
- Enter the IP address of your printer
- In the Add printer wizard it should automatically go to your printer on the list of printers, if not you can choose Windows update or find it manually on the list
- Finish and it should be set up.
